Melrose Firefighters Free 2-Year-Old Boy, Dog From Hot Vehicle

MELROSE (CBS) -- Melrose firefighters freed a two-year-old boy and a dog from a hot locked vehicle on Saturday.

Firefighters from Ladder 1 were called to Cottage Street about 5:45 p.m.

The boy's mother was putting him and the dog in the Honda Pilot, when he hit the lock button while the keys were still in the vehicle. The child was too young to follow instructions to unlock the door.

Fire officials say the toddler and dog had been in the Honda for about 10 minutes. The temperature inside the vehicle was nearly 100 degrees, causing both to sweat.

It took about 10 minutes for firefighters to free them using tools to grab and release the lock. Had it taken another 5-to-10 minutes to free them, firefighters would have had to break the glass.

The child and dog did not have to be taken to the hospital.
