MBTA's New Red Line Model Car On Display At Boston City Hall

BOSTON (CBS) -- Commuters got a sneak peek of the MBTA's new Red Line cars on Tuesday. A model will be on display at Boston City Hall this week.

"I think it's pretty cool," said Gov. Charlie Baker, who also toured the car with Boston Mayor Marty Walsh  Tuesday.

The cars are part of a replacement plan for both the Red and Orange Lines, a plan that will put 250 new subway cars on the rails. They have more space, wider doors and increased safety with public safety cameras.

"The average Red Line car currently in the fleet has traveled 2 1/2 million miles, so it's no wonder it's time to replace them," said state Transportation Secretary Stephanie Pollack.

The MBTA is also spending millions on signal upgrades and track improvements.

"It's a massive investment. It's way overdue, and it's a big part of how we deal with the deferred maintenance issues that have plagued the system," Baker said.

A handful of new Orange Line cars will go into service at the end of this year. The full fleet replacement won't be complete until 2022.

The hope is the improvements taken together will increase speed, reliability and comfort.

"I think it looks really great. I like the seats that fold up. It looks like there's a lot more room," said rider James Grady of Brookline.

"A lot of people complain about the Red Line so this is a needed improvement. This is nice to see," said Christina Grady of Brookline.

MassDOT Communications Director Jacquelyn Goddard said the public can also view the car on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

The MBTA is seeking feedback before they move forward with production. A factory in Springfield will manufacture 252 new Red Line cars, said Goddard.
