Matsuzaka Trying To Turn Around Rough Spring

BOSTON (CBS) – Daisuke Matsuzaka is off to a rough start for the Red Sox this spring, but his manager is not too worried.

"I'm not real concerned about anybody in camp. We want to leave camp healthy and guys feeling good about themselves," manager Terry Francona said.

Matsuzaka will get another shot to turn things around against the Detroit Tigers Tuesday afternoon. It will be his fourth start of the spring, and things can only go up from his first three.

Matsuzaka has allowed 11 earned runs off 12 hits in just 8.2 innings pitched. His ball-to-strike ratio is not terrible, 50 of his 78 pitches have been strikes, but teams are swinging away against him.

After going two innings and allowing just one run in his spring debut against the Twins, Matsuzaka has struggled mightily in his last two outings. He gave up seven runs to the Marlins and another five against the Rays giving him a 13.50 ERA for the two games.

The way the Red Sox look at it, spring is a time to work things out. It's better to get shellacked in the March than in April, May and especially September and October.

"I haven't looked at anybody's ERA," Francona said. "I know Daisuke got hit around a bit the other day, but if we took Daisuke out of the rotation tomorrow, I wouldn't want to play for me. We have to let these guys get ready."

Francona is known for sticking with his players, but does have options if Matsuzaka was to fall out of the rotation. Alfredo Aceves started Monday night against the Yankees, hurling three innings of one run ball. He has allowed four earned runs over 10.1 innings, but the Sox are most likely to use him out of the bullpen to start the season.

How long Aceves stays there could be up to Matsuzaka.
