Phantom Gourmet: When Pigs Fly Pizzeria In Kittery, Maine

KITTERY, MAINE (CBS) -- There's nothing quite like a hot, cheesy pizza and a cold beer. And if you're up in Kittery, Maine, there's no better place to get it than at When Pigs Fly Pizzeria.

"You can come in and have a great pizza, have a beer at the bar, watch a game. . . it's fun, "says owner Ron Siegel.

For Siegel, creating delicious pies, and preparing great dough is practically second-nature because for the past 20 years, Ron and his brother Andrew had already been baking up top-quality artisan breads. And today, there are When Pigs Fly Bread stores stretching from Maine to Jamaica Plain.

"We always made great bread, and what's pizza?" asks Siegel. "Pizza is great toppings on great bread."

And though Ron's formula may be simple, his flavors are wonderfully complex.

There's an asparagus and spinach pizza made with tomato pesto and creamy fontina cheese...

Grilled pineapple and capicola pizza studded with mozzarella cheese and spicy jalapenos...

Even a duck confit pizza topped with cranberries, goat cheese and sherry syrup.

And while you may come here for the pizza, you'll want to stay for the hot pastrami sandwich topped with a fried egg. . .

Thai chili calamari served with minted cucumber and pomegranate. . .

Steak frites cooked to order. . .

And the super-sized cookie ice cream sandwich.

If it looks like this menu has something for everyone, that's because it does. And it's no accident; it's all part of the Siegels' mission to create a lively, welcoming restaurant.

"I like the fact that it's just casual," Siegel says. "It's just a casual, laidback restaurant, moderately priced in a great area that serves great food, great beer, and great cocktails."

You can find When Pigs Fly Pizzeria at 460 Route 1 in Kittery, and online at whenpigsflypizzeria.com
