QB Jacoby Brissett Only Remaining Unsigned Patriots Draft Pick
BOSTON (CBS) -- After another busy weekend, the New England Patriots signed all but one of their nine picks from the 2016 NFL Draft. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who notably decided to negotiate his rookie deal without an agent, remains the only unsigned pick on the team.
The Patriots announced on Friday that they had officially signed their other eight draft picks, including cornerback Cyrus Jones, offensive linemen Joe Thuney and Ted Karras, defensive tackle Vincent Valentine, wide receivers Malcolm Mitchell and Devin Lucien, and linebackers Kamu Grugier-Hill and Elandon Roberts. Though Brissett remains unsigned by the team, he is attending rookie mini camp.
He may not have an agent, but Brissett has built a strong relationship with Hall-of-Fame former Patriots head coach Bill Parcells, who clearly holds Brissett in very high regard. "He's just an awesome kid. He's awesome," Parcells told Ben Volin of the Boston Globe an an in-depth profile on Brissett.
Brissett certainly has the size and arm strength of an NFL quarterback, and his mentors have had nothing but great things to say about the former N.C. State quarterback's character. But, until he actually steps foot on an NFL field in a game that counts, it will be nearly impossible to know whether or not he can succeed as a starter at the highest level.
Wherever Brissett's career goes from here, however long he ends up staying with the Patriots, Parcells knows he couldn't be in a better situation under the tutelage of Belichick and the leadership of Tom Brady.
"I just tell him what to expect and what to be prepared for, that's all," Parcells told the Globe. "I don't know everything, that's for sure, but I'm very happy because I know he's going to get good coaching and a good opportunity, and that's all any player can ask for."
