Heyman On Crawford: I'd Be Stunned If He's Not A Star

BOSTON (CBS) - Nearly all Red Sox fans are surprised by Carl Crawford's dismal start to the 2011 season, leaving many to wonder if he can handle the pressure of playing in a big market like Boston.

Sports Illustrated's John Heyman does not think that is the issue.

"I'd be shocked if he can't handle the pressure," Heyman told 98.5 The Sports Hub's Gresh & Zolak. "He's been in a lot pressure packed situations in the past in the playoffs."

"This is definitely a pressure packed time, not only starting in Boston rather than Tampa, but the pressure of the $142 million contract and proving that you're worth it," Heyman said of the seven-year deal Crawford signed with the Red Sox over the winter. "Everybody has rough times, this is his. It happened to come at the beginning. I would say there is extra pressure, but I'd be stunned if he's not an absolute star with the Red Sox."

Crawford, a lifetime .295 hitter, is batting just .132 in his first 14 games with Boston. He has just two extra-base hits, and the fact he cannot seem to get on base has led to just two stolen bases.

"He has been terrible," Heyman admitted,  but is confident Crawford will turn it around soon. "In a season, everyone has a stretch like that. But if it's in June or July, it's not noticed as much."

"I will accept that it could be the pressure at the beginning here that is extra on him." Heyman said. "But this is a guy who has had a long career and is still a young guy. There's no reason for him not to be a star in Boston."

Boston is really hoping Heyman is right.
