BOSTON (CBS) - With the Denver Broncos coming to town this Sunday for a huge battle of AFC supremacy, Mike Felger and Tony Massarotti felt it was an opportune time to revisit the Wes Welker exodus from New England.
Wes Welker ranks first all time in Patriots history for receptions, second in receiving yards and eighth in receiving touchdowns.
However fans, and Welker himself, were upset with the way his Patriots tenure ended.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft said at the time that "everyone in our organization wanted Wes Welker back" and that their deal was actually better than Denver's.
However, a deal wasn't to be made and fellow slot receiver Danny Amendola signed on the dotted line instead.
We're just over halfway through this NFL season, and Wes Welker signed a 2-year deal with Denver - so we're right at the quarter mark in accessing this player swap.
To Felger and Mazz, it's a little early to access the final score...but so far it's not even close.
"It's been a total failure [so far]," said Felger. "Wes Welker has played 10 games. He has 61 catches, good for sixth in the league, and on pace for 98 catches. He has 9 touchdowns, which is tied for fourth in the league. He has 40 first down receptions."
"Danny Amendola has played in 6 games with 29 catches, which ranks tied for 94th in the league. Amendola's only scored one touchdown. How can you say anything other than you would have been better off with Wes Welker here over Danny Amendola?"
"The Patriots are getting their asses kicked on this one," said Tony Massarotti. "Has Amendola been a contributor? Sure. But to the degree of a guy like Welker? Not even close."
Felger went on to compliment Danny Amendola's skill set, and feels like he does bring a lot to the table...when he's on the field.
Both agree that if Amendola can produce and stay relatively healthy for the remainder of his contract then they'll readjust their grades, but so far the Patriots have lost this one.
