Falmouth police picked up nearly 500 nails on local streets overnight and are now trying to track down who is responsible for possibly positioning them on the streets and in residents' driveways.

After seeing pictures posted on the department's Facebook page Don Willson immediately checked his tires with many of the nails ending up in his neighborhood. "It's just mean," said Willson.

Nails spread across street like spike strip

Some nails appear deliberately placed point up.  On John Parker Road they were spread across the street like a spike strip.

"It's disturbing for sure," said resident Deborah Bent. Two nails, point up, were placed right beneath the tire of a pickup truck parked in front of her home that police also recovered overnight.

"If they rolled forward, it could have punctured the tires for sure. They may have been pitching them out the window, but there were some that were deliberately put in front of people's tires," said Bent.

Nails were also found around Kathy Hartford's car and driveway. Police let her know with a knock on the door at 2:30 a.m. Friday. "They thought it was probably children, kids, teenagers, just a prank looking to be seen or on Facebook or something like that," said Hartford.

The discovery was centered around several streets all within a mile radius.

Neighbors concerned about danger

Cindy Collings says she's pretty sure one of her tires was a victim and called police. There were two nails in a tire, and she ended up at a repair shop to have them removed. "I thought 'oh my God' this is really happening. I asked what kind of nails, and they said they were galvanized which matched what I had," said Collings.

Neighbors say this is not a prank but a potential danger to drivers. "It's going to cost people their lives if they get into an accident, it's really bad," said Willson.

Falmouth police are asking residents for any information or surveillance video they may have captured that caught someone in the act.
