Amid Wall Street Fears, Teens Soar At Stock Market Game

BOSTON (CBS) – Despite a tumble in the Dow Jones Industrial Average and fears of an economic slowdown in China, two very young investors are still reaping the benefits of the stock market.

Catholic Memorial High School seniors Jimmy Kim and Andrew Chen led fellow students to first, second and third place victories in a statewide student stock market competition of more than 1,000 individuals and teams.

Kim and Chen began the competition in September with $100,000 of fake money.

They simulated investing that money in very real and global capital markets.

Kim invested his money in solar energy and manufacturing displays.

"I focused on what is going to be important on next generation of future," Kim said.

Chen decided to invest his money in gold and copper mining.

The teens finished the game in December.

Kim landed in first place with a 41.5 percent return above the S&P 500 and total equity over $140,000.

Chen led Catholic Memorial investors to a 34 percent return for second place and 27 percent return to capture third place.

The pair intends to enter another competition in the spring.
