BOSTON (CBS) -- It's incredible that anyone would take the bait with Dan Shaughnessy these days. But if anyone would, it's UConn women's basketball head coach Geno Auriemma. He has been defensive about his team in the past, and now he felt the need to launch a volley back at Shaughnessy.
This time, it wasn't even about one of Shank's troll-tastic columns for the Boston Globe. It was about a tweet. This tweet:
Shaughnessy's tweet was really just a reflection on the utter lack of competitiveness in UConn games, making their 60-point blowouts and monopoly on women's basketball practically unwatchable. That didn't stop Auriemma from saying, among other things, "There are a lot better writers than Dan Shaughnessy but that doesnt mean he's bad for the game."
Shaughnessy attempted to clarify his argument on Toucher & Rich Monday morning. Not only does he think UConn's relentless dominance is hurting the product, he finds it hard to believe that ESPN would believe otherwise.
"It doesn't make [UConn] bad ... As I said, you don't want to punish them for their greatness. But it's not good for viewers and for ESPN," Shaughnessy said. "And I know they're all defending it, but they can't be liking this either. When your tournament, your featured thing, has 60-point victories by one team, that's won 119 out of 120 by an average margin of 19 ... You don't win by 60 in a tournament, folks.
"What I like about sports is competition; you tune in wondering who's going to win. And when that's extracted, it's not for me, that's all."
Shaughnessy also likened UConn's games, stripped of the competition aspect, as "performance art," and felt compelled to clarify his deep family ties to women's sports and affinity for the games. Listen to the full response below.
