Daisuke Matsuzaka Placed On DL, Mauro Gomez Called Up
BOSTON (CBS) -- The stiff neck that limited Daisuke Matsuzaka to just an inning of work on Monday night is going to keep him off the field for a bit longer.
The Red Sox placed the right-hander on the disabled list on Tuesday, one day after he allowed five earned runs in just one-plus inning against the Oakland A's. The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo first reported the move.
The team called up first baseman Mauro Gomez to fill the vacant roster spot. Gomez, 27, was called up earlier in the season, going 0-for-2 in limited action. He's hitting .311 with 19 homers, 26 doubles and 55 RBIs with Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Since returning from Tommy John surgery on June 9, Matsuzaka has gone 0-3 with a 6.65 ERA. A stiff neck prevented him from throwing his normal bullpen session between starts over the weekend, and the results on Monday were enough for the Sox to place him on the DL.
