Turtles Help Concord 4th Graders Win Big In National Challenge

CONCORD (CBS) - Big congrats are in order for the fourth graders at Thoreau School in Concord.

They just took second place in a national challenge.

WBZ-TV's Jonathan Elias reports

Teacher Susan Erickson offered ideas for projects. The students took on the idea to protect local Blanding Turtles.

This project took off big. They took field trips to study the turtles in their natural habitat, documented what they saw, and even had a couple as pets in their classrooms.

The goal of their efforts is to get the turtle off the endangered species list. The best way to do that is to bring attention to this, and that's what they did.

The kids even held a 'turtle night' to educate their parents and others. This challenge was offered up by the Disney Planet.

For second place, they got cash.

To all those involved, Congrats.
