Cambridge, Massachusetts police shoot and kill man who allegedly pointed gun at officers

Police in Cambridge, Massachusetts, shot and killed a man in his 60s who allegedly pointed a gun at officers Friday night, the district attorney and the police commissioner said.

The shooting happened on Temple Street, which is near Central Square, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Pauline Wells said in a joint statement. They said police got a call just before 8 p.m. that there were "suspicious individuals" gathered in a loading dock area behind a business, and they had been there for a while.

Police officers arrived and started talking with people at the scene.

"The preliminary investigation suggests that a man in his 60s, who was seated in a vehicle when the police arrived on scene, allegedly exited his vehicle and pointed a firearm at officers," Ryan and Wells said. "Cambridge Police Officers attempted to physically disarm the individual and multiple shots were fired striking the individual."

The statement said officers found a loaded gun on the man, who was pronounced dead on the scene after receiving medical aid. Several Cambridge police officers were taken to the hospital as a precaution and released.

The man's name has not yet been released. No other information was immediately available.

Temple Street was closed Friday night as the public was asked to avoid the area. The shooting scene is near the Central MBTA stop on Mass Ave.

Ryan's office is investigating. All of the responding officers were wearing body cameras, and that footage will be reviewed, authorities said.
