Buchholz: 'Bar Is A Lot Higher' For Red Sox
FORT MYERS, Fla (CBS) - Expectations are high for everyone in Red Sox spring training this season.
Josh Beckett predicted 100 wins. Mike Cameron jumped on board with it, and now so is Clay Buhchholz.
"If there ever was a team, this is the one that could do it," Buchholz said from Fort Myers Wednesday morning.
"Just with the names coming in it puts the bar a lot higher than it was at the end of last year for us, which is a good thing," the 26-year-old right-hander said. "If everyone expects us to do good, it means we should have a pretty good team throughout. Expectations for the fans, for the staff, even us players are pretty high."

Buchholz is coming off a career year in 2010. He went 17-7 in 28 starts and was second in the American League with a 2.33 ERA. Buchholz went a perfect 4-0 with a 1.03 ERA in August, as the Red Sox were trying to stay alive in the playoff race despite a rash of injuries. If it wasn't for two loses to start September, Buchholz could have hit the 20-win mark on the season.
This year, he hopes to reach that goal.
"That's a number when a starting pitcher gets to, it's not really met that much," Buchholz said. "I don't think you hear about guys winning 20 games a whole lot now. That's something every starting pitcher wants to do. They want to throw 200 innings and get to 20 wins."

Buchholz learned a lot during his breakout season, but knows he can still get better. This spring he is focusing on maintaining a fluid motion in his delivery. He wants to keep the same tempo from pitch-to-pitch, and get rid of the little hop he occasionally has at the end of his delivery. Once he gets that down, the pitches will come.
"I think it's basically all mechanical. I'm not trying working on a particular pitch right now," he said. "I think once (I have) my delivery, and I repeat the delivery on each pitch, I think the pitches will come out and they'll be there."

Red Sox fans will get their first glimpse of those pitches this weekend, when Buchholz takes the mound against the Twins Sunday night in the Grapefruit League opener. Buchholz is slated to pitch after starter Josh Beckett.
