B's Down One Trade Target, Ruutu Re-Signs With Carolina

BOSTON (CBS) -- You can scratch off one name from the list of potential Bruins trade-deadline acquisitions.

The Carolina Hurricanes extended center Tuomo Ruutu for four years. The deal is worth $19 million, or $4.75 million per season.

Ruutu was believed to have been very high on the Bruins' wish list. The 29-year-old has 17 goals this year after scoring 19 goals in 82 games last season. Ruutu was due to become a free agent this summer, thereby making him a hot commodity leading into Monday's trade deadline. With the Hurricanes sitting in dead last in the Eastern Conference with 57 points, they looked to be sellers, too. However, Ruutu's new deal -- complete with no-trade clause for three years -- takes him out of the madness of trade deadline season this year.

"Players like Tuomo are extremely difficult to replace, and it is very important for our franchise to keep him here long term," Canes GM Jim Rutherford said in a team release.

Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said he has been looking to add a forward or a defenseman as the team copes without Nathan Horton for an undetermined period of time (concussion) and Rich Peverley for four to six weeks (knee injury).
