Breer On Toucher & Rich: Belichick Wants To Win Without Brady

BOSTON (CBS) - Patriots fans close their eyes, muff their ears and turn away at the simple thought of it, but there will come a time when Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are not roaming the Gillette Stadium sidelines.

According to the NFL Network's Albert Breer, Brady will be the first to go. He came on 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich show Monday morning to discuss the topic.

"Here's the one thing I've heard consistently over the past few years: Belichick wants to win without Brady," said Breer. "Whether that's here in New England or somewhere else I don't know. You hear this from people around him that one of the things he would like to do is win a Super Bowl without having the benefit of one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time."

Fred and Rich have theorized that perhaps Belichick will go work for his pal Jon Bon Jovi if and when he purchases the Buffalo Bills, but Breer thinks that Belichick has it too good here in New England to just up and relocate to Western New York.

"Bill's got the organization set up in Foxboro and it would take such a long way to set it up somewhere else," said Breer.

So Belichick isn't going anywhere, he wants to prove he can win without TB12 and the team used its second round pick in May's draft on a quarterback. Add all these things up and the end of the Tom Brady era could coincide with his contract expiring at the end of the 2017 season.

"I think the most likely scenario is that he outlasts Tom Brady in New England. He likes the situation up here and it's a legacy thing too. Bill Walsh was one of the greatest coaches of all time but he's tied to Joe Montana. Jimmy Johnson never won a Super Bowl without Troy Aikman. You can go down the list. I think from a legacy standpoint -- and Bill Belichick cares about this, I think we all know that -- one thing that would set him apart is finding a way to win with a second quarterback.

"Winning with a second quarterback in the same place would cement him and maybe even put him past some of the really respected names Vince Lombardi, Walsh and all of them," Breer concluded.
