Consider this:
Bradley Jay: 'Should Dodgeball Be Banned As A "Human Target" Sport?'
The Windham School board voted to end dodgeball and other "human target" games.
The lone dissenting school board member in the 4 to 1 vote, Dennis Senibaldi, said "It's almost turning into a nanny state," "What happens when they replace that game with something different that another group doesn't want to play, do we eliminate that group of games?"
Which brings us to football. Isn't that the ultimate "human target sport? If we have to do a way with dodgeball, doesn't football have to go too?"
Some kids are good at certain activities and some kids are not. It is a teaching model for real life. Kids have to learn the sting of failure and how to deal with it and move on.
Some parents worry that the game is a vehicle for bullying. There is that possibility, so the activity has to be monitored, just like any other sport.
Windham's Superintendent, Dr. Henry LaBranche, told WBZ-TV the school district is trying to teach students to respect one another, and the games "create conditions inconsistent with that message".
Really? Is he saying one can't respect a competitor? Using that logic, we would have to ban all competition. And in the words of the Temptations song "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone, "that ain't right."
As a matter of fact, students have been emboldened to petition for a return of dodgeball.
