BOSTON (AP) -- Five teachers from southern New England are among the nation's recipients of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
President Barack Obama's office announced the 85 winners Thursday after they were selected by a panel of scientists, mathematicians and educations.
The recipients receive $10,000 each from the National Science Foundation. They'll also travel to Washington, D.C., later this year for the awards ceremony and visit members of Congress and the administration.
The Massachusetts winners are science teacher Wai Chin Ng of Boston and math teacher Michael Flynn of Southampton. Rhode Island's recipients are math teacher Beverlee Powell of Warwick and science instructor Charlene Tuttle of Jamestown.
In Connecticut, the winner is science teacher Lori Farkash of Wallingford.
