Sail away to Block Island! Your next getaway is only an hour away! 00:15

Block Island, located off the coast of Rhode Island, is a charming and picturesque destination that should be on your list if you're considering a summer vacation. There are many opportunities for vacationers to come experience Block Island. Whether as a daytrip or as a multi-day vacation, it's all accessible with a quick trip on the Block Island Ferry!

With its pristine beaches, beautiful scenery, and stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, Block Island offers a relaxing and tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Visitors can take a leisurely bike ride along scenic paths, explore the island's historic lighthouses and attractions, or simply relax on the beach and soak up the sun.

The island is also home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, with local galleries and shops showcasing the work of talented artisans and craftspeople. With its natural beauty, laid-back atmosphere, and wide range of activities, Block Island is the perfect destination for anyone looking to unwind and recharge this summer.

Take a Hike!

The two-hundred-and-thirty-eight acres that make up Rodman's Hollow are the perfect place to start. Not only do you get two separate paths to explore, but the tucked away beach or Fresh Pond make it must-see. You'll find the Fresh Swamp Preserve in the southern part of the Island. Being a preservation means this area comes with the added benefit of getting to see rare plant and wildlife not likely found anywhere else.

Located three miles from town along Corn Neck Road, Clayhead Trail is a little different from the rest. The infamous 'Maze' was named by Block Island locals, and it fits. The combination of twists and turns allow you to take your time exploring and figuring out the trick for yourself, all while leading you towards a collection of rocks with notes designed to help you meditate and relax.

Home to these trails and more, Block Island seems naturally constructed to keep you outside and entertained for hours on end.

Grab a Bite to Eat

The food and drink available at Block Island's eateries are top-notch. New Shoreham has many different varieties of cuisines to choose from. Of course, seafood is a staple here, but you can also find everything from filet mignon to sushi to hot dogs on the island.

If you're looking for meatless options, most restaurants offer vegetarian and vegan on their menus. Most restaurants offer indoor and outdoor seating. If you were on the mainland and looking to get a table near the water, you could be waiting quite a while. On Block Island, every restaurant is just a stone's throw from the ocean!

Go for a Stroll Around Town

There's plenty to see and do once you take that first step off the Ferry. You shouldn't let that overwhelm you, though. Quite the opposite, in fact. This is the perfect excuse to explore, and you can't go wrong!

Take in the local art galleries and museums. They're run by people with real passion for both their own work as well as the work of other artists. There's no substitute for seeing pieces of Block Island history with your own eyes. In the case of galleries, the odds are good that the photos and art prints on display will be available to buy.

You'll also find a whole host of gift & specialty shops to walk around and explore. Feel free to bring your coffee or snack as you peruse for anything that might wind up catching your eye. Whatever your pleasure, whether a sweatshirt or piece of original art, you'll get to keep a piece of Block Island at home to remind you of your vacation.

Beaches. As Far as the Eye Can See…

Block Island is just over 9 ½ square miles and has 17 designated beach areas. Each brings something different to the table. Some are great for little children while others are the perfect spot for surfing. If you're interested in taking in the island's most stunning sites and get a little sunbathing at the same time, check out the Mohegan Bluffs. After visiting the historic Southeast Lighthouse, take the 141 steps down the staircase to the base of the 200-foot-tall cliffs at the edge of the ocean. It's a sight to behold!

Not only is beach access free on the island, but most, if not all, are accessible by bike if you're looking to make a sort of day trip out of it. There's no better place to catch up on that book you've been reading, enjoy some of your favorite music, or just relax in the sun and sand. Whether it's their views, area-specific activities, or various degrees of privacy, Block Island's beaches have what you're looking for!

Spend a Night Out on the Town

There are plenty of positives to the summer season. One that's hard to beat is the longer, lighter, warmer summer nights. But where do you spend those nights?

Live music is especially popular on the island during the summer months, with performances providing a pleasant backdrop to your night. There are many different types of musical options to choose from. If you're looking for disco dance parties or to rock out with a live band, there are a few clubs on the island for you to check out. If a single acoustic guitar out on a deck under the stars is more your speed, we've got you covered there as well!

Unless you're planning a whirlwind daytrip, consider booking a stay. Block Island has many hotels, inns, B&Bs and property rentals to choose from. Most are right near the attractions by the ferry landing in Old Harbor.

There's always something happening on Block Island this summer. It's an island getaway just an hour away! Whether you plan to visit for a day or stay overnight, you can find detailed information on all the island's businesses and attractions at the Block Island Visitor's Center in Old Harbor. We hope to see you there!
