Bill Belichick On Advanced Metrics Websites: 'What The Hell Is That?' [VIDEO]

BOSTON (CBS) -- Bill Belichick is known for leaving no stone unturned and looking into every last detail when preparing his team and studying his opponents. So you'd think that he would look at every kind of statistic, whether basic or highly advanced, that he could get his hands on, right?
Not if you're talking about "advanced metrics websites," apparently. "The what now?" Belichick replied when asked during his Friday press conference about how much those advanced metrics websites have affected the way he evaluates quarterbacks.
"What the hell is that?" Belichick asked after rolling his eyes at the very idea of the question. When the intrepid reporter tried to follow up, Belichick explained his thoughts on advanced metrics in no uncertain terms.
"You can take those advanced websites and metric them in whatever you want. I don't know. I have no idea. I've never looked at one. I wouldn't even care to look at one. I don't even care what they say."
He continued by explaining how he evaluates quarterbacks, which is a process that can't really be helped by looking at numbers on a stat sheet:
"As far as the quarterback goes, read the coverage, throw the ball to the open receiver, take the best matchup. That's what it is in a nutshell. The quicker we're open, the clearer the picture, the sooner the ball's going to come out. If we don't have anybody open, who's the quarterback going to throw to?"
He finished off the line of questioning with a classic Belichick quip:
"All the metrics they use and all that, I have no idea. You need to ask that to a smarter coach than me."
Belichick is more of an old-school kind of coach, and that works for him. To Belichick, "advanced" stats like ESPN's QBR and Pro Football Focus grades are useless to him, and frankly, they should be. Ultimately, football is not a math problem. At some point, coaches need to look up from the stat sheet and use their eyes.
