16-Year-Old Arrested For Springfield Birthday Party Murder

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy they accuse of shooting and killing a 38-year-old man who attempted to intervene when the teenager tried to disrupt a birthday party in Springfield.

Police monitoring the suspect's Wilbraham Street home arrested him when he tried to get in a cab that had pulled up to a house behind his home shortly after the early Saturday shooting.

A system of strategically placed acoustic sensors linked to a computer alerted police to the shooting at 1:52 a.m. Officers found Antonio Gonzales suffering a gunshot wound to the chest. They performed CPR and he was later taken to Baystate Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators identified the suspect and discovered that he was heading to his home.

Arresting officers recovered the gun on the porch.
