Towson Grad Student Found Dead Off-Campus With Suspected Heroin

TOWSON, MD. (WJZ) -- A Towson University graduate student is found dead in her apartment. Inside, police find what they believe is heroin.

Christie Ileto speaks exclusively to the young woman's friends, who feared the worst.

Friends of Darcie Moloshok say she was fun loving with a good sense of humor, but all of that took a turn for the worse during a welfare check.

Towson students Huda Kahn and Yumna Farag can't shake the shock of Friday morning.

Police say their friend, 28-year-old grad student Darcie Moloshok, was discovered dead inside her off-campus apartment, along with a suspected drug--heroin.

"Her mom contacted Yumna because she was worried. And I was like, 'OK. I'll go check,' and I didn't get any response," Kahn said.

Kahn says that's when she knew something was off.

"I called the management and I told them I'm worried about my friend, but they said they couldn't go on without police escort, and that was a decision that her mom needed to make," she continued.

Towson University police were the first to arrive at Moloshok's apartment. What they discovered inside prompted an immediate call to county police and paramedics.

Reports of cardiac arrest followed--what health experts say is a common side effect linked to the deadly drug discovered inside.

Heroin has become what Governor Hogan calls a rampant epidemic across Maryland.

Last year, overdoses in the state jumped 25 percent to almost 600 deaths.

"It was very hard to hear the news," said Farag.

But friends focus on Moloshok's life.

"She was a very nice person. She was one of the most accepting people I've ever met," said Farag.

Her official cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner.

In a statement, Towson University says: "This past Friday we were saddened to learn of the death of our graduate student, Darcie Moloshok. We have been in touch with Darcie's family and have offered them our full support."

Last September, another Towson student was found dead at off-campus apartment. Police said she had been drinking when she fell into a glass door and suffered head and neck injuries.
