Scientists warn shrinking sea ice is putting emperor penguins at unprecedented risk

Researchers analyzing satellite images found emperor penguins being forced into tighter, overcrowded groups as sea ice beneath them rapidly disappeared during molting season—a period when they shed feathers and are not waterproof. If the ice breaks while they’re molting, the birds can become hypothermic and die. Scientists say only meaningful climate cooling can give the species a real chance at survival.
