Dallas community leader, SMU alum to be deported after losing ICE case

A Dallas community leader and SMU alumnus, Omar Salazar, will be deported after losing his immigration case Wednesday night, following seven months in ICE detention. Salazar was accused of remaining in the U.S. illegally after a traffic stop last year. His attorney said the ruling could be appealed, but that option would require Salazar to remain detained for an additional eight to 12 months. Instead, Salazar is proceeding with voluntary departure, which must occur within 60 days. Because he is married to a U.S. citizen, he will be eligible to apply to reenter the country, though his attorney said that process could take three to six years.
