Today friends and family gathered for the funeral of Botham Shem Jean, the man shot and killed a week ago in his apartment by an off-duty Dallas police officer.
The alleged gunman, in his 60s, was arrested on the spot for assault with a deadly weapon.
"I am still in denial. I cannot believe that my boy is not here," said Bertram Jean, Botham's father.
The Dallas City Council will hear from activists today calling for more citizen oversight of police following the shooting death of a 26-year-old man in his own apartment.
Dallas police swiftly admitted that a white officer who shot a black man in his own apartment last week had made a mistake.
"It's the saddest thing, because I think that family has known hardship, and they kind of keep to themselves," said Noel Anderson who lives next door to Guyger's mother.
The incident began when a city Marshal attempted to pull the suspect over. The suspect initially complied but then put a gun to his own head and took off.
Alexander Clair Bessenecker, 39, died at the scene in the 3700 block of Hawaii Drive on Monday.
