Not only did Gordon end a career-long 66-race winless streak in the Sprint Cup Series, but he spoiled Kyle Busch's attempt at another NASCAR trifecta as well.
Sunday's race featured a record 74 lead changes, 22 different leaders and 16 cautions before a rookie driver surprisingly drove into victory lane.
"This has been an incredible Speedweeks, and I just don't want it to end," Busch said after winning his first qualifying event at Daytona. "I want to make sure we keep doing everything right."
Dale Earnhardt Jr. will have to forfeit his pole position for the Daytona 500 after crashing in Wednesday's first practice session.
In expectations of further lowering speeds at the newly-paved 2.5-mile track, NASCAR has shortened the size of the four holes on the restrictor plates.
Earnhardt Jr. is looking to rebound after two disappointing seasons in NASCAR's top circuit. He finished 21st in points last year and 25th the year before.
