Wylie Residents Brace Themselves For "Gigantic Hail"

WYLIE (CBSDFW.COM) - Sunrise to sunset, hammers are pounding together new roofs across Wylie.

"I was the first house they did," said Wendyl Vick, who keeps a piece of damaged plywood from his old roof as a souvenir. "I can put my fist right through there and not even touch it," he said, demonstrating the size of a hole the hail punched through it. "There were at least 400 holes in my roof that were just like this."

Nearby, repairs are wrapping up at Shirley Jones' home, but it's hardly a relief. "Very anxious. Very concerned," she said.

With "giant hail" in the forecast for North Texas tomorrow, homeowners already hit twice this season wonder if they will come under attack again. "I've already been charged two deductibles and I simply can't afford a third deductible," said Jones.

Roofers said people with serious damage also can't afford to wait on repairs. Some families are living in hotels; others are seeing leaks.

"Every single house in this neighborhood has leaked after the hail storms... after contractors came up and put tarps up," said Mike Jansen from Aspen Contracting.

Many hail storm survivors know there's not much they can do to prepare for another storm. "Keep your stuff inside and watch the warnings," said Vick. But they still do what they can.

"I plan to put my car in the garage, close the doors, and hide in a closet and pray a lot!" said Jones.
