Very Nice Until Its Very Cold
We can see VERY cold air trapped up in Canada this morning. We see readings up toward the Arctic Circle that are in the -30 to -40 range. Some of this cold air is going to come racing toward us this weekend. This is going to make for a tale of two weather stories for the last weekend of 2013.
We had clouds move in overnight; they are keeping temperatures right around freezing this morning around the metro area. Clouds will be streaming up from the south most of the day along with a little big of a south wind. This gets temperatures into the upper 50's by afternoon, a very pleasant day.
Here is FutureSky Forecast breaking out the weekend for you. If you are out tonight its going to be mild, in the 40's with just a wisp of a south wind:
If you are out early on Saturday it'll be warmest morning since in a week, lows will be in the upper 30's in most places, low 40's in the metroplex:
Even warmer tomorrow with a stronger south wind and that mild start. We should have highs reach to around 60°:
We'll have another mild evening Saturday night and another mild morning on Sunday:
Notice the cold front in the northwest on Sunday morning. Its been a cold December so Mother Nature won't let us get through the month without at least one more shot of cold. This front brings a dramatic change in temperatures during the morning hours on Sunday. By 10am we should have the warmest temperature of the day, in the mid-40's. That's just as the front arrives turning the winds to the northwest. A passing shower is expected with this front but the rain will be light:
It's going to be cloudy, windy and cold Sunday afternoon. It'll also be about 30° colder than Saturday afternoon, just 24 hours earlier:
This cold air will be around Monday as well, overnight lows will be down in the low 20's with highs only around 40°. It warms up just a little in time for the New Year. Below is your extended forecast.
With the freezing temperatures on Monday and Tuesday morning we get close to a record. We've had a total of 20 freezing night so far in 2013. With the low hitting 32° at DFW this morning, we'll likely end up with 23 freezing nights by the 31st, tying the record for most freezes in a calendar year:
