LEWISVILLE (CBS11 SPORTS) - The U.S. Women's Water Polo team is following in the footsteps of the U.S. Women's Soccer team and not bashful about it at all.
Just like their female counterparts in soccer, the U.S. Women's Water Polo team are the reigning Olympic Gold Medalists.
This week they made their way to Lewisville, Texas to take part in a friendly international tournament.
It's just a warm up for the official Olympic qualifying tournament next month in Holland. Courtney Matthewson, a member of the gold medal team from 2012 in London says ,"we're as prepared as we can be and expect to be on the medal stand in Rio.
One thing that stands out about the team is the young lady playing goalie.
Ashleigh Johnson is hopeful of being a member of the final roster, and says she loves to encourage other African American young ladies to take up the sport. Coach Adam Krikorian says the color that will always matter most is gold.
And while he makes no promises, he guarantees the nation will be proud of the effort of this team, every step of the way.
