FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -  Two people were hit and killed by while walking along a dark stretch of road in Fort Worth early Monday morning.

North Main Street was shut down for several hours after the accident, which happened around 12:30 a.m.

Police say a SUV struck the man and woman as they walked along the northbound lanes of the road.

The driver of the SUV stopped immediately and tried to help the couple.

Police say they found a pickup truck parked near the accident scene, and investigators are trying to determine if the two had car trouble and were walking to get help.

CBS 11 talked to Jimmy Copeland, a man who said his grandson and his grandson's girlfriend were the victims.

Copeland says he had a gut feeling that led him to the scene.

"Just tragic for something to happen to a young couple like that," said Copeland.

Police say no charges are expected to be filed.  Investigators say the driver will be alright.
