DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - An SUV crashed into an apartment building on West Tenth Street at Waverly Drive in Oak Cliff, killing three people in the SUV at the scene.
"My first impression was, 'my God what's happened?'" said Steve Horton who lives nearby and rushed to the scene.
Police say the driver of a blue Dodge Durango plowed down that street, into a parked car, then barreled into a first floor unit.
Witnesses say the driver sped straight toward the building.
Police have yet to identify the victims but they were a man and two women. But loved ones of the victims have.
Estrella Hernandez came searching the debris for any sign of her great-grandfather.
"This was a shock for all of us. We're all in shock at home. We don't know what happened. Why it happened," said Hernandez.
She says 93-year-old Paul Maltos was in the back of the SUV. In the front passenger seat, she says, sat his wife.
"They were newlyweds basically. They were married.. what?... two years," says Hernandez.
Hernandez doesn't know the third victim, the woman she says was driving, but Ernest Esparza told CBS11 it was his mother. He says the SUV belonged to his brother. He says he has no idea why their mother was in it with a couple they had never met.
"We're trying to figure out what's going on right now," says Esparza. "We don't know."
Witnesses say the SUV ran several stop signs before hitting a parked car. The impact threw both vehicles into the first floor apartment.
One person was inside the four-unit apartment house when the SUV plowed into the front entrance. He says he walked to the back for a glass of water just before the crash. He was not hurt.
