FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Jackie Moreland said she knows all of the feral or wild cats in the now abandoned Parkview Village apartment complex.
"This is Smokey, he's about 6 months old, and his mother's name is Callie-Wallie," said Jackie Moreland
Even though she didn't live here, she said she's come here to feed and care for them for three years. But the problem here is beyond her control.
"We were very concerned, that's what we do we try to help these feral cats," said Irma Porta of the Panther City Feral Cat Coalition Irma Porta.
Irma Porta is among the volunteers now setting traps to collect the cats. The Texas Coalition of Animal Protection will neuter and vaccinate them.
They may look and sound cute, but they've become a nuisance in the area. The count is up to about 100.
"If you don't do this, what would happen to these cats? They would multiple and multiply and become more of a nuisance," explained Porta.
Some of the cats are easy to catch. Some play hard to get. Others are smart enough to get food on the right side of the cage with out getting caught.
But Jackie Moreland is just glad these cats are getting more help. "I'm extremely happy, I'm elated."
Thursday volunteers were able to caught 16 cats with their traps. They will continue the rest of the week.
After the cats are neutered and vaccinated for rabies, the Humane Society of North Texas will evaluate them to see how many of them can be adopted.
They're not sure yet what they'll do with the feral or wild cats in the long term, but they don't want to put them down.
