Tracy Kornet: Super Bowl Storms & Goodness

FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Can you believe the wild week of weather?

It was supposed to be five, full days of glamorous remote coverage live from Sundance Square, celebrating sport, celebrities, and all things Super Bowl. Instead, we managed to sneak in one day of live, on-location newscasts Monday on CBS11 News at 4pm and 7-9pm on TXA21. We've spent every day since trying to report and stay alive on the icy roads.

Driving to work with my co-anchor Tuesday, Keith and I were rear-ended at a light.

On the way to a downtown hotel that night, police had to rescue me when I got stuck on an icy hill.

The next morning as I attempted to drive north for boots and winter clothes to report on the power outages, I crossed an icy bridge on 1-35W.  I completely lost control of my station vehicle. I hit the left guard rail and did a 180, as a semi-truck brushed my side. I felt so fortunate, especially when the man in the car behind me was carried off in an ambulance.

Two hours later, driving into my neighborhood, I spun out again, then slipped on the ice and thumped my head while walking to my husband's car. I nursed a major headache on the couch for the rest of the afternoon.

All in all, not a very good day! But it was a sobering reminder of the dangerous conditions these weather events create and why we cover them so extensively on the news. Equally important to me, though, it's also been a powerful reminder of the goodness in people.

Neighbors helping neighbors. Police calming scared drivers. Strangers towing strangers out of ditches. I am genuinely touched by it all.

There is something so inherently kind and beautiful in every person. My mother helped me identify this fact early on in life. And even with all of the horrible and sometimes freakish news stories I report regularly, I still believe it. I refuse to allow mental illness, evil, or selfishness in the world change my mind.

I chose to see the good.  And I hope that this severe weather, or any all of life's difficulties, may continually remind you of the beauty, too.
