DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Salvation Army has set up 15 cooling stations across North Texas to help the homeless, or anyone else in need, cope with the intense heat that is expected over the next few days. The area's first Heat Advisory goes into effect starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

Those cooling stations are expected to be very busy. They offer cold water, air conditioning and tips on how to stay safe in this dangerous heat.

The emergency homeless shelter located along Harry Hines Boulevard, near Butler Street, is housing an average of 200 people each night. That is about twice as many as normal and, officials said, the increase is due to the unbearable heat.

But these stations are not just for the homeless. Elderly folks and even families have stopped by to receive some helpful things for handling the heat. "We get individuals that come in from the community that are going through some tough times," stated Jeff Upperman with The Salvation Army's center in Dallas. "They may be in danger of losing their home. So, we will help them out — provide them with food from our food bank. The can come in, and we've actually been giving out fans."
