The @CBSDFW STORM TEAM BLOG: Ragweed & Mountain Cedar Together...Oh My!
Today's ragweed count, taken daily by ENTDocs in Plano, is the highest in over ten years, according to a worker with ENTDocs.
ENT Specialist Michael Phillips told me over the phone that doesn't recall the ragweed count as high as it's been today in at least 13 years. The count set a record for this date.
We had a very wet August, which allowed the ragweed plant to bloom readily, but September was very dry, so spores of ragweed pollen were allowed to roam free. The system late last week that blew through helped stir up the ragweed pollen even more, leading to today's record count.
If that weren't enough, mountain cedar pollen showed up in the count today for the first time this season. Many North Texans are highly allergic to both ragweed and mountain cedar. We'll need a good rain to wash out the air to get some temporary relief. Thankfully rain is in the forecast Friday night and again early next week.
We don't usually see ragweed go away altogether until the first freeze late in the fall or winter.
