DENTON (CBS11) – Public universities across Texas are scrambling to set forth campus carry gun policies ahead of the August 1 deadline.
While the policies are being drafted, one North Texas school is facing a rare challenge.
Texas Woman's University in Denton is one of a few school in the state that has both traditional dorms and family housing mixed together on campus.
That set-up, according Elizabeth Pauley, the Director of Public Safety at TWU, has been proven difficult as they set their campus carry policies.
"It hasn't been easy, but we have turned to the community," says Pauley.
The Campus Carry Law allows guns in dorms but other areas are left up to the discretion of the university.
In the case of TWU, they have chosen to ban the guns in the playground and daycare that sit right outside the dorms in their housing community.
Pauley admits this has caused confusion on campus, but she says this is the best way to provide a policy in accordance with the law.
"People have their opinions on campus carry, but once we get past the opinions we need to get down to the business of coming up with a policy to be good stewards of the law that was passed," says Pauley.
Pauley says she expects 300 to 400 of the students at TWU will be eligible to apply for a permit.
