AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas troopers will be out in force over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend to catch drunken drivers and other traffic violators.

The Texas Department of Public Safety says increased patrols begin Friday and run through Monday.

DPS troopers during the same period last year arrested 413 people for DWI, issued 5,439 speeding citations and handed out 1,053 seat belt and child safety restraint tickets. Troopers also cited 684 drivers for not having insurance.

Officers arrested 182 fugitives and made 168 felony arrests.

DPS will also be part of the "Click It or Ticket" enforcement campaign to encourage compliance with seat belt laws.
