Manhunt underway for 2 suspects after North Texas shooting leaves teen dead, another wounded

Authorities in Kaufman County are searching for suspects in a deadly shooting that left one 18-year-old dead and another wounded late last month, as federal officials have also issued a wanted alert for a teenager in connection with a capital murder case.

The Kaufman County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded around 10 p.m. on March 26 to a reported shooting in the area of County Road 103, where two victims were found with gunshot wounds. Investigators identified them as 18-year-old Kace Dean Leatherwood and 18-year-old Luis Velez.

Leatherwood later died from his injuries, while Velez survived, though his condition has not been disclosed.

No arrests have been made, and authorities said both suspects remain at large as the investigation continues with assistance from the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Marshals Service.

U.S. Marshals identify teen wanted for capital murder

A wanted poster released by federal authorities on Thursday identified Diego Carlos Rodriguez, 18, as wanted for capital murder in Dallas since March 27. According to the notice, Rodriguez was last seen in Kaufman County. He is described as 5 feet 4 inches tall, about 130 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Family members of Leatherwood have identified Rodriguez as one of the suspects in the March 26 deadly shooting, though local and federal authorities have not publicly confirmed that connection.

Investigators have not released details about a possible motive.

Community members are planning a candlelight vigil to honor Leatherwood on April 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Rockwall and Brin Church of Christ in Terrell. Funeral services are scheduled for April 11.

Anyone with information about the shooting or Rodriguez's whereabouts is urged to contact the U.S. Marshals.
