Texas Gubernatorial Candidates Setting Fundraising Records
AUSTIN, Texas (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - Attorney General and Republican Greg Abbott has a massive amount of cash on hand, a little more than four months before the election for Texas governor.
According to fundraising numbers for the period ending on June 30, Abbott has $35.59 million dollars in cash on hand for his campaign. It is the highest amount of cash on hand reported by a Texas candidate, according to a statement released by his campaign.
Meanwhile, Democrat Wendy Davis reports having $13.1 million in cash on hand. The Fort Worth state senator Tuesday reported raising $27 million over the past year, which is about a million more money than Bill White did in 2010.
Her campaign counts more than 140,000 contributors since her star-making filibuster last summer in the Texas Capitol over new abortion restrictions.
White raised more than $26 million as the Democratic nominee four years ago but still lost by double-digits to Gov. Rick Perry.
Davis is a similar underdog against Republican Attorney General Greg Abbott. Since January 1st of this year, his campaign has raised $16.6 million, with 95 percent of it coming from within Texas.
