Texas Again Wins Conditional 'No Child Left Behind' Reprieve

AUSTIN (AP) — The U.S. Department of Education has again granted Texas a conditional waiver to avoid some academic accountability standards imposed by the federal No Child Left Behind law.

But the department also placed Texas on "high risk status" for having future waivers rejected.

The Texas Education Agency said in a statement Tuesday that securing waivers beyond the current school year will require statewide use of teacher and principal evaluations.

It will also mean using those evaluations while making personnel decisions.

The federal policy was created under President George W. Bush and based on some policies from his time as Texas governor.

Texas long opted not to seek a reprieve from it, worrying about federal strings attached.

But the state reversed course and sought a wavier for the first time in 2012.
