Texans Among Winners In Moose Hunting Lottery
GREENVILLE, Maine (CBSDFW.COM/AP) — The state of Maine has selected the winners of more than 4,000 moose hunting permits and several Texans will be going after the big game.
The lottery was held over the weekend and thousands of hunters showed up.
The state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says more than 52,000 applications were submitted for the record 4,110 permits.
The lottery is held to help control the state moose population that is estimated at 76,000 animals.
Hunters last year bagged almost 3,000.
Most of the permits go to Maine residents, but 10 percent are set aside for out-of-staters. Winners in this year's lottery included two North Texas hunters and hunters from Louisiana and Virginia.
The moose hunting season is mid-September to Mid-November. Hunters are allowed to bag one animal each.
