DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -  Most of the students exposed to Thomas Duncan, the first person to be diagnosed with the Ebola virus on American soil, have returned to school.  Five Dallas Independent School District students were under quarantine and being monitored by health officials for the past 21 days.  They all received the all clear to return to normal activities at midnight on Monday, and four of them returned to school later that morning.

None of the students showed any Ebola symptoms while they were being monitored, according to health officials.

DISD officials had advised and expected the students to return to school on Tuesday, October 21.  The district was unaware that the students would return earlier until they arrived at school.

"While we had planned on them coming back to school Tuesday, they were obviously eager to return back to the school environment and decided on their own to attend," said Superintendent Mike Miles. "Because they have been cleared by medical authorities and pose no health risk to any students or staff, we have no intent on sending them home. Their interest in getting back into school is encouraging,"

DISD says school counselors and staff welcomed the returning students and are on alert to watch for signs of bullying.

Three additional students who had contact with Duncan, will also start a new DISD school tomorrow.  They had previously attended schools in Richardson ISD.  The district says the 21-day waiting period for these students is also over and the students are expected at Jill Stone Elementary School at Vickery Meadow tomorrow.
