Strong Storms, Heavy Rains Monday

The risk of severe weather is high Monday, especially for counties just to the south of the metroplex. We'll have a very windy day with highs getting close to the mid-60's. Skies will be cloudy but the winds from the south will be 20-25mph.

A strong cold front moves in from the west during the afternoon and early evening. There is a chance of some thunderstorm activity well before the front arrives from a Granbury to Corsicana line and south.

These storms will have to be watched, they could produce isolated tornadoes, damaging winds and small hail. The Strom Prediction Center puts a 15% chance of severe weather for tomorrow, I'm guessing that when Garry Seith shows you this information tomorrow morning 4:30-7am that 15% chance (in the color yellow, the cluster of black dots just north of the line represent the population clusters of DFW) will include the metro area.

A strong squall line will race through the metro area in the evening tomorrow.

This is going to bring a brief deluge of rain, near an inch in most spots. The line will also be likely producing some damaging winds as it moves through. Short-lived weak tornadoes could also spin up along the line. This is looking more and more as the best chance for severe weather and heavy rain we'll have for the rest of the year. The last week of December is looking very dry. We are already in the books as a month of above-normal rainfall, the HPC puts generous rains over the metro area from Monday's storms line:

Where you see the light blues across central Oklahoma that'll be snow. Lots of it teamed with a very strong wind. If you are traveling into the Texas or Oklahoma panhandle tomorrow and into central Kansas tomorrow night take pause. This looks to be close to a foot of snow delivered in near-blizzard conditions. Here is where the HPC is predicting the heaviest snow to fall:

WEATHER GOING INTO CHRISTMAS

There will be a couple of cold fronts move through north Texas next week and weekend. Right now we'll keep the forecast dry but we'll certainly have below-normal temperatures for the most part. It should be only in the upper 40's on Tuesday with some light precipitation and brisk north winds under mostly cloudy skies. Sunshine on Wednesday but only in the low 50's. Clouds on Thursday but in the upper 50's before a cold front comes through. Down to freezing on Friday morning and highs barely in the 50's. Christmas Eve day looks slight colder, highs will probably stay in the 40's all day. On Christmas day we'll have some sunshine with highs again only around 50 degrees.
