Transportation & Abortion Votes In State Senate
AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Senate returns to Austin for scheduled votes on new transportation funding and abortion restrictions.
The transportation bill requires a constitutional amendment to use some oil and gas severance taxes to pay for road and bridge building and maintenance. That money now goes into the state's reserve fund.
Texas leaders say the state is critically underfunded to meet the transportation demands of a rapidly growing state.
The abortion measures would ban the procedure after 20 weeks, allow abortions only in surgical facilities, and place greater restrictions on abortion-inducing medications.
Abortion rights groups complain the bills would shut down 90 percent of the abortion clinics in the state.
All of the abortion bills came up in the regular legislative session but never made it to a final vote.
