Spotlight On: Upcoming Film Festivals and Series

The Dallas International Film Festival recently brought movie buffs together during their 11-day showcase of features and shorts from 26 countries, but there are more film festivals to look forward to these next few months. From experimental video to international hits, here's a guide to the upcoming film fests and series that deserve red carpet treatment.

Asian Film Festival of Dallas

This is the AFFD's tenth year bringing the best of Asian cinema to Dallas, and it's a year that promises to be bigger than ever. Looking for some knife-throwing, high-kicking, explosive fun? You'll get it with Hong Kong action master director Benny Chan's Shaolin (which will open the festival) and City Under Siege. Other films in this year's lineup include Dante Lam's The Stool Pigeon, starring Nick Cheung and Tung Shing-Lee's Triple Tap. Jackie Chan fans won't want to miss Little Big Soldier, an action-comedy set during the Warring States Period of China, starring (and written by) the popular action star.

Coinciding with the 8th Annual Modern Dance Festival, the Modern is presenting a lineup of shorts, documentaries, and feature films from the 2011 Dance on Camera festival at Lincoln Center. Get tickets for the award-winners: Hoop, an exploration of the childhood toy, the Hula Hoop; Ase, a celebration of the lives of African slaves in the Carribean who managed to preserve their religious worship rituals; Ebony Goddess:  Queen of Ilê Aiyê, about three women competing to be the carnival queen, and The Last Tightrope Dancer in Armenia, about the most celebrated tightrope dancers in Armenia and their student, who may be their only hope to keeping their heritage alive.

Since 1986, VideoFest has been the premier Dallas showcase for experimental film. If you're interested in seeing the best independent shorts, animation, documentaries and innovative storytelling from some of the most exciting, up-and-coming filmmakers, this fest is for you. And this year, a new sub-category representing subculture and counterculture is being introduced, so expect skating videos and music videos in the schedule. VideoFest will also screen the winners of the 24Hour Video Race, held in May.

Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour

The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour will be making its stop in Fort Worth to bring adventure, action and travel to the big screen. Outdoor types will love the amazing adrenaline-pumping stories, and exploration of mountain cultures and extreme sports. Even if you're not traveling this summer, this film series will provide you with a passport to remote locations around the world. Presented by Women in Film.Dallas (WIF.D), the Chick Flicks Festival celebrates Texas women in film, showcasing new and seasoned talent in a variety of genres. More than just a showcase of great short films by female filmmakers, the festival is also an important fundraiser for Women in Film.Dallas to provide scholarships for women and students in the film industry. The fest is still accepting submissions (deadline is August 31), so filmmakers should check out more festival info here.

Film Series: Picasso and Braque's Paris

In support of the exhibition Picasso and Braque: The Cubist Experiment, 1910–1912 currently on view at the Kimbell Art Museum, the Lone Star Film Society has partnered with the Museum to bring this film program that evokes 20th century Paris, and the personalities and culture that inspired Pablo Picasso, Georges Braques and the Cubist revolution. Films include Picasso and Braque Go to The Movies (July 10), Pica (July 24), and Montparnasse Revisited–The Man Behind Picasso: Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (August 7).
