Hopkins County (CBSDFW.COM) - The SPCA of Texas and the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office seized 8 dogs, 5 puppies, 1 quarter horse and 1 pony from an abandoned residence in Como this afternoon.

The dogs and puppies are now receiving the veterinary care they urgently need at the organization's rescue center.

The dogs were found outside the home without food or water. They were tethered by short tow chains restricting their movement. The dogs are malnourished, suffering from flea and tick bites, and hair loss. The puppies were infested with fleas and had runny noses.

The horses are both are suffering from malnourishment along with overgrown chipped cracked hooves, which cause tremendous amount of discomfort when walking.

After several neighbor complaints, Hopkins County authorities and the SPCA of Texas obtained a seizure warrant and moved forward with the removal of the dogs, puppies and horses, as the animal's conditions were not in compliance with Texas Health and Safety Code.

Criminal charges are possible under the authority of the Hopkins County Sheriff's Office. A court date is set for July 7, 2016 at 11 a.m.

The SPCA of Texas will now focus on rehabilitating the dogs, puppies and horses for adoption or placement on a case by case basis.
