GREENVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - Sheriff Randy Meeks said that he will address the media Wednesday after a video was posted online showing a pregnant woman apparently being beaten by one of his Hunt County deputies.
Meeks had already released a statement on Monday saying, "Public confidence and trust in the Sheriff's Office is a high priority for me, and we take all allegations of misconduct seriously."
That posted video features two men in uniform, but does not show 38-year-old Deanna Robinson. She claimed that she was handcuffed by those men despite being nine months pregnant at the time. One of the men is seen punching several times just before the clip ends.
The video was taken a month ago, during a Child Protective Services call to a home, but was just posted online this past weekend. The deputies were helping CPS with a court order to remove Robinson's toddler from her care after a dispute between her and her husband.
Robinson was arrested and charged with interferring and assaulting an officer. But she denies any wrongdoing. "I'm 38 weeks pregnant," recalled Robinson. "And my stomach is pressed into that counter with my 18-month-old watching his mother be assaulted, and him screaming in fear, watching his mother being beaten."
Robinson's four children, between the ages of 1 and 9, are temporarily in CPS custody. An investigation began after the oldest child told his school teachers that he was afraid to go home because his parents were fighting. Robinson's lawyer said that a meeting with CPS caseworkers turned into an "ambush."
Meeks is scheduled to address the media at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
