PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) -- A citizen called Plano Animal Services after seeing two-year-old 'Red', a severely malnourished boxer mix, on the patio area of an apartment in Plano last October.

The dog was surrendered to Plano Animal Services on Oct. 7, but is now getting a second chance at life.

"When we got him he was 28 pounds," said Animal Services Manager Jamey Cantrell. "He's now over 60 pounds. We don't know how much longer he could have gone in the conditions he was in."

Cantrell says Red looked like a skeleton with red fur pulled over it. They nursed him back to health after getting help from a specialist and caring donors. All together, the surgeries cost more than $3,000.

Red will soon be available for adoption; however, he will require special attention once he finds a new home.

Red is described as very loving and typical two-year-old dog.

Charges against the owner for inhumane treatment are still pending.
