SEVERE WEATHER BLOG - MONDAY, DEC. 19th

800pm - lingering rain in Dallas and Collin County but nothing too heavy.  Strong storms continue from Canton down to Athens.  A strong storm in Freestone County might be producing winds to 50 mph.  Lots of lighting coming into Fairfield shortly.  Severe threat is over for all of the metroplex but strong storms will be possible in far East Texas tonight.  Rain will end in Dallas next few hours and it will be cloudy and cool tonight with lows around 44.

700pm-Radar rainfall estimate across Dallas County.  Most areas around .30 to .60" of rain but a few pockets close to 1".  Radar usually overestimates a little.

6:47pm - This a product we use from the NWS...it shows where there's the best chance of thunderstorms developing and becoming strong.  Notice how the threat is diminishing here and moving southeast.

641pm - Viewer pics of post storm sunset.

6:25pm - Powerful upper level storm system moving northeast over the Texas Panhandle...producing snow there.  Cold front pushing rain off to our east now.

6:11pm - With 4.31" of rainfall at DFW Airport (as of 6p)...this is now the 14th wettest December on record.

6:04pm - Storms moving east of the Metroplex.

6:02pm - It could be worse - - - From the AP:  Governor Rick Perry's office says 20 National Guard troops and six vehicles that can maneuver in the snow have been deployed to parts of the Panhandle. The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for Amarillo and portions of the Panhandle to the west and north.

5:48pm - From the NWS: Urban and small stream advisory coming for areas from Navarro County to Bell County. Line of storms is moving very slowly to the east, so there will be additional training of storms. Localized areas of heavy rainfall possible.

5:30pm - Strong storms capable of gusts close to 40-45mph from Melissa to Wylie to Heath to Mesquite pushing east/northeast at 40 mph.  Raining buckets for a short time filling up lower-lying areas...be careful on the roads.  Rainfall amounts have been less than 0.50" because the storms are moving so fast.

5:15pm - Heaviest storms of the day affecting eastern Dallas County and southern Collin County.

5:00pm - Storm picking up intensity in Dallas County...possibly some small hail...certainly very heavy rainfall & gusty winds.  Be careful driving around in lower lying areas where flooding is more likely.

4:54pm - Heavy rain is done in Tarrant, Denton, & Johnson counties

446pm - From NWS "Getting a lot of reports of "scary looking clouds" along the leading edge of the line. Lots of circulation areas evident, but they are quite shallow in nature." this is in Ellis County and Dallas County as storm is coming thru.  There is a lot of spin in the atmosphere generating this scary looking clouds.

442pm - NWS issues Areal Flood Advisory for Dallas, Ellis [TX] till 6:45 PM CST

430pm - Significant Weather Advisory issued for Ellis Co.  Radar showing a weak circulation south of Maypearl and west of Italy.  Winds could gusts to 50 mph with this storm.

420pm - CBS 11 SKYTRACKER Mike Rogers at Robson Ranch in Denton Co, reports .41" of rain after heavy downpour came thru.

415pm - Strongest storm on Johnson and Ellis Co line.  Winds could gusts to 40 mph between Maypearl and Midlothian next 20 minutes.

4:05pm - CBS 11 SKYTRACKER Tom Soulsby reports .47" for the day in Keller.

4:00pm - .35" of rain fell in ten minutes on the north side of Fort Worth as heavy rain moved thru.  A few lightning strikes being detected near Avlarado in Johnson Co.

3:50pm - National Weather Service saying after a conference with Storm Prediction Center..no Tornado Watch is anticipated in North Texas at this time.  Conditions are just too weak to borderline to produce widespread severe weather.  Still could be a few strong storms especially east of I-35E and south of I20 throughout the next 2-3 hours.

345pm - heavy rain moving thru Fort Worth down to Cleburne into Hill County.  Lightning tracker showing only 14 cloud to ground lightning strikes with this rain.  Gusty winds 20 to 30 mph with heavy downpours but nothing severe.

3:30pm - Line of rain/storms approaching Fort Worth.  Line extends south through much of Johnson County and into western Hill County.  This will  mainly be just heavy rain for a period of 15-20 minutes along with some lightning & gusty wind.  Wind gusts so far have been 20-30mph.  Still a slight risk for severe weather, but nothing severe so far.

3:22pm - Heavy storms also affecting western Hill County.  These have the greatest instability and spin to work with..although nothing severe right now...just brief heavy downpours.

320pm - From NWS, Line of showers/storms moving through eastern Wise and western Tarrant County now. Nothing reported except for brief periods of locally heavy rain. Gusty winds are likely associated with the leading edge, but surface observations only show 20-30 mph gusts in western Tarrant County

308PM - Heavy rain moving into Tarrant County with merging storms south into Johnson County.  This heavy rain will stream northward.  Between 3pm and 430pm is timeframe for worst weather in Tarrant County.  Left over rain after 430pm.  From now thru 6pm in Dallas County is timeframe to watch for worst storms.  After that just some left over rain.

253pm - storm are merging over Somervell and Bosque county leading to some heavy rain near Glen Rose and Meridian.  Nothing severe, but storms showing some signs of strengthening.

238pm -Significant Tornado Parameter shows where we have the best available moisture & spin in the atmosphere to see supercell thunderstorms produce tornadoes.  You can see that the best signs of that is well south of the Metroplex…down toward the Waco area.  Certainly the farther south you live, the better chance to see strong to severe & rotating storms.  Again, there is plenty of spin in the atmosphere today, but lackluster instability. ~Jeff Jamison

230 pm - Radar snapshot as of 227pm.  Lots of spotty showers and storms developing ahead of line.  Nothing severe at this time.

RADAR IS HERE

215pm - A few lightning strikes being noted in Hunt County north of Greenville and some individual storms trying to develop in Navarro County.  We will have to watch this closely out ahead of the line of storms.  But dewpoints are still in the 50s.  60s dewpoints mean the air is more humid and more likely to produce severe weather.  The new Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center still has areas from DFW south in the Slight Risk for severe weather today.

2pm - Showers and a few claps of thunder have been moving thru the metroplex, but nothing severe so far.  There is a line of showers and storms that has moved thru Mineral Wells and Stephenville that is rapidly approaching the metro area.  This may intensify but be thankful for the cloud cover and cooler temperatures.  That may limit our severe weather intensity.
