ROCKWALL (CBS11) - The City of Rockwall is set to discuss a controversial ordinance that would require people to use the restroom that corresponds with the sex listed on their birth certificate.

Mayor Jim Pruitt proposed the "potty provision" that would make it a misdemeanor if someone were caught or allowed someone to use the restroom of the opposite of their listed gender.

North Carolina recently passed a similar law some feel targets the transgender community.

"I mean I think that's weird but it's kind of pointless too," said Rose Njoku, a Rockwall resident. "I think it shouldn't matter. She went through all of that trouble or he to change themselves, so they should use the bathroom that they feel."

Some residents in Rockwall have safety concerns after stores like Target put policies in place that allow people to use the restroom they feel comfortable using.

"If there's danger present or if there's a dangerous situation that might happen, even if it's the smallest remote chance, you're always going to protect your children," said Keith Thieman, a Rockwall resident. "The parts that you have, is the place where you should go."

Mayor Pruitt would not make any comments regarding the ordinance he proposed.

If the city council approves the first read of the provision, it would get a final vote on May 16.
